We Got This!

"I tell him I tried. I tried to keep memory alive; I tried to fight those who would forget. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. There is so much injustice & suffering crying out for our attention. We must take sides. We must interfere. -E.W.

We Never Leave Home

Blue Moon Construction has done so much for Ryan!

Blue Moon Construction has done so much for Ryan!

Sue and I are embarking on a home improvement project that would not be possible without the kindness of Blue Moon Construction. This company is just so wonderful. Okay, so it’s (mostly) for Ryan’s benefit, but that’s not to say we won’t enjoy it as well. We’re adding a deck to the back of our house. It’s nothing fancy, mind you, but will serve us well. Pending HOA approval next week, this will begin on September 5th and take a week or so to complete.

Sue said it best in an early email to John Ronay (owner of Blue Moon):

“We never leave home so this is basically takes the place of vacations, social outings, and normal life, so I want to make it nice.”

It’s true too. Ryan’s (and our) relaxation takes place just outside our basement door on the wonderful patio that was put in for Ryan a year-and-a-half ago. Expanding this space (upward) will allow us more room to enjoy it. It will give cover for the patio and let us take advantage of it on more days. I’m actually going to have the awning (purchased through donations) placed above the deck so that it provides cover for two levels!

Another useful outcome is it will give us another way to access the main level. Instead of stairs, we’re putting in a ramp that will level-off and expand by the hot tub. This will be where the spa lift will be installed to get Ryan in and out of the water.

Update: The Spa Lift fundraiser is getting closer to the goal. As of this morning we are nearing 50% of the target. To donate, just click on the “Easy Online Donation” for a one-time contribution and put “SPA LIFT” in the memo/note field. It’s that simple!

At some point I’d like to add some goodies; like a heater/fan on the underside of the deck. You know, like the kind used at golf driving ranges. A few bench seats and planters would be helpful as well. Who knows, maybe next year or the following for some of these things? In the meantime, it’s fun to think about the possibilities.

The kindness of so many wonderful folks – Blue Moon, Michael & Sons, Koons, and so many others – really warms the heart. Thank you to all who are helping this very special family.

Hi Ken, I know that you, Ryan and Sue spend the vast majority of your time on the lower level. It kind of makes me sad because you have such a lovely home. I imagine the main living area looks almost untouched – similar to how it did almost four years ago. I am hopeful that having the deck will allow your whole family to once again be able to enjoy the rest of your home.

To the wonderful employees of Blue Moon, thank you so much for helping with this project!! I look forward to the day when I can make use of your services on my home. After seeing the quality of your work, I can see why you have received so much positive attention and praise!

Ken, I’m praying you will be able to get Ryan into the hot tub before it gets cold. I’m sure it would help with any muscle stiffness and soreness. Just to get out of that wheelchair and feel something other than sitting there or lying in bed — I can only imagine how nice it would feel for him. Again it just pains me how much was stolen from him, and from your whole family, Ken. Team Diviney is still here to go the distance with you, and we’re not going anywhere!

Sending you love, hugs, prayers and hope. Still keeping the faith and staying the course for our boy. Paula

That’s the beauty of a hot tub… it can be used year-round. In fact, colder nights are the best (especially with a snowfall).

This is just too cool! Blue Moon Rocks!

Sue, we were the same as you when we had our house in Winchester. We never went anywhere so we sometimes camped out in the basement for a change of scenery.
