We Got This!

"I tell him I tried. I tried to keep memory alive; I tried to fight those who would forget. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. There is so much injustice & suffering crying out for our attention. We must take sides. We must interfere. -E.W.

The Great Haircut Incident of 2013

April 8, 2013 by Ryan's Rally LLC 20 Comments

It is rare when Sue and I disagree on anything when it comes to Ryan. We know him better than anyone. Except, that is, when it comes to his hair. Ryan was always changing his look. One day he had a full head of hair that is almost over his eyes and the next it’s buzzed.

Sue likes his hair short. As a blanket statement, she likes all men to have short hair. Even me, despite the fact that I don’t have the nose to pull it off (i.e., it’s bigger than is appropriate for my face). I buzzed mine about two years ago (more to keep marital peace than anything else) and I hated how it looked on me. My thought is, if I don’t have the face to make it work then it is best to add something else with visual interest. In other words, hair.

ryan graduationI, otherwise, don’t give a hoot how other men wear their hair. As a personal preference, I like mine longer than most. I LOVE Ryan’s at about medium length. Exactly as he had it for his high school graduation picture. He has great hair!

If you got it, flaunt it! That’s good advice for the women out there too…

So, as a compromise Ryan gets a “summer cut” and a “winter cut”. The deal was that he will get his buzz when the outside temperature hits 85 degrees for the first time. To be clear, here in Ashburn it got up to seventy degrees yesterday. By my math, that’s a full fifteen degrees difference.

You might image my surprise when I woke from a nap to see Ryan… well… buzzed.

Sue claims she never heard, and thus never agreed, to the 85-degree rule. I didn’t push it because Ryan looks great both ways. Β He’s what the lady’s call “a looker”.

Besides, Sue was proud of the job she did on him. Also, she had dinner cooking on the stove and I wanted her to let me eat it. That’s not to say I won’t bring up the “2013 Haircut Scandal” if I need to get myself out of a tight spot because of something stupid I will certainly do.

I’ll keep this as my ace in the hole.

I like it longer. But, I’m from the long haired generation. You know, Peace Out and Groovy and all that jazz. But he is handsome either way! I hope I get to meet him one of these days. πŸ™‚

Ken, my husband (of 36 years) has always told me that he has to look at me and he should have a strong vote as to how I wear my hair. (He’s been right 99 % of the time!!) Now I’m claiming the same right since he as grown out a beard. (I like it clipped short) Ahh… married life…. πŸ™‚

SHSP. Ryan looks cute either way – not picking sides here, know better than to get involved in other people’s marital agreements. For that matter I don’t even like getting involved in our own πŸ™‚

    …….If Mama ain’t happy, then…….
I do agree with you on this one Ken. I never buzzed or let my husband buzz my son’s hair growing up. I always looked at (and still do) boys and men with a buzz and think to myself, “they would look so cute with hair”. He never had really long hair because of the Catholic school regulations. After high school he let it grow a little length. Of course now my son has short short hair because his fraternity buzzed it (hazing?) and he has come to like the short hair feel in the summer.
If I was to vote I would say, Ryan is mighty handsome in his graduation pic!

I’m with Sue! The buzz is always best! (I just allowed my son to get ONE ear pierced if he agreed to monthly haircuts.)

OMG that is hysterical! You made me laugh out loud, too funny! I would think it would be easier to keep his hair short (washing, keeping check on sores, combing…) I am going to laugh about this all day. It’s just too funny. Thank you.

I just recently started following your story and as I have said before. Your family touches me! The real connection you can spark up in anyone with your family and especially Ryan is a gift! I know days go by and blessed may not be a word you find appropriate, but you really are a blessed person. I love feeling like I am part of the Ryan family!! I have no doubts Ryan looks handsome with his buzz cut! So great to see some humor! Prayers for Ryan and your family still flowing from South Dakota!

LOL Your too funny! It’s nice to hear that you all try to keep things going like everything is normal because I truly believe that Ryan knows what’s going on around him and loves that you all are doing all the things you always did. That must make him feel hope somewhere deep inside! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all!!!!!!!!!!

Ken, today it is supposed to reach the high 70’s. Can you and Sue agree to a compromise, if so she will only have been 1 day early. I love his hair both ways as well! Much love to you~
