The doctor performed the bronchoscopy last night around 8:00PM. It was done bedside, so we had the opportunity to see Ryan’s lungs in real time. Both lungs were clear and healthy looking. The only mucus accumulation was at the bottom of the ventilator tube and this is expected since it has a tendency to catch secretions when he coughs. A sample was collected and sent for culturing. It takes at least three days for this to grow out.
It is certain that Ryan will spend the next two or three days in ICU. For the most part, his blood work has been coming back favorable. His white count is at 6.5 (normal). He is showing a potassium deficiency and his sodium is moving in and out of the acceptable tolerance range. Both are being addressed. We are hopeful that he will be extubated sometime tomorrow. The sight of him on a ventilator is saddening.
By all indications, after leaving ICU Ryan will spend some time on the medical floor. There is a long shot he might be discharged to home. The doctor, although it is out of his hands, wants us to refrain from guests for a couple of weeks once home. He continues to stress that Ryan’s immune system is greatly compromised. At a minimum, he wants Ryan to receive his full two week antibiotic treatment (that began on Christmas Eve). We believe this is good advice and will certainly follow it.
Still pending are:
- Extubation/Removal from Ventilator
- Dental Consult
- EEG Report
- Opthamologist Consult
- Sputum Culture Results
- Twice Daily Blood Work
In all likelihood, most of this will occur on Monday or Tuesday.

The Ryan family has done a wonderful job keeping us informed with pictures, dates, times, etc etc etc. This is hard work within itself but thank you again for keeping the public and everyone else in Ryan’s life informed.

Hello Diviney Family! Thank you very much for this update on Ryan. We’re continuing to pray for restoration of his health. We totally understand that Ryan can’t have visitors until he gets past all this. Thank you for taking the time to let us all know what’s going on. I really appreciate it!! Thinking of you, Sue, sweet Kari and of course dear Ryan. Please let us know if there is a particular need you have. For example, we’re all worried about making sure you are getting decent meals at the hospital! I’ll be out of town next week, but when I get back, I’ll be checking in to see how I can help. Love you guys, mean it! Paula
