It was just this past Saturday that I wrote about how sometimes Ryan “vocalizes” in response to our prompting. As it turns out, no sooner did I put that post out then I come upon Sue working with Ryan out on the patio. I grabbed my video camera and captured this short clip (although it went on much longer).
Sometimes it’s hard to hear him because it is so faint, but a couple of times when there’s no mistaking it.
I’ve been dying to see how much closer you are to getting a Spa Lift!! Any update??
You bet. I update it daily and display it in the website’s sidebar (the thermometer on the right).
Came across the website, good luck with your sons recovery, very sad what happened to him.
These movie updates remind us the reason for this website…RYAN!
Your day to day blogs are great, but moving images of Ryan really hit home and heart. I see the pain and heartbreak in Sue when she said “I love you” to Ryan and feel her desperation for him to answer her back. As a mother that’s what we all want from our children those simple words. I know that is what he was saying to you Sue.
I also am glad to be reminded that his eyes are still sutured closed. I have to think back now as to why.
On another note, how is the van going? What a great gesture of Koons! We need some movies of Ryan in the van trolling the town!
Anna, the eyes were partially stitched shut because Ryan doesn’t close his eyes. It was causing chronic eye infections, resulting from the dryness. We had to apply eye drops every 2 hours (now every 4) and it just wasn’t enough. The cornea was scarring and he faced serious risk of losing his eyes.
๐ I had “watched” the video but not listened until just now. He is definitely responding to you. You ask him to do something and he did it, exactly like Sue asked. In the movie I think Mare Winningham (http://www.biography.com/people/mare-winningham-20824993) should play Sue. They remind me of each other. Beautiful ladies!
Thank you for sharing his ๐ love you both ! Tell Ryan hi and tell him we all heard him!!!
Wow! What a wonderful thing to see and hear! Thanks for sharing and our prayers continue for Ryan!!!
Excellent news and signs of continued progress. We are keeping up with our prayers and this is motivation to continue asking God top help Ryan and his family. Thank you for posting the video. Great!
Wow!!!! This made my day!!! WTG Ry! I’m doing my happy dance ๐ Keep working hard honey! So, so, so proud of you!
WOW. I’m as teary as some of the others who’ve commented. I know Sue was trying to get Ryan to say, “Ahh” but to me it sounded like he was saying, “Ma” or “Mom.” This is awesome!
My daughter (6) wanted to know if Ryan has eyes. I said yes, of course. I’m assuming that his eyes are still sewn shut? Can you give us an update on his eyes? Will the stitches come out at some point? Can the health of his eyes be tested/looked at with them closed?
Meg, yes, his eyes are still shown partially shut. They will likely stay like this… At least until he either begins closing them or blinking more frequently. His eyes are checked weekly by Dr. Hinkle (a.k.a. Nicest Man in the World), but a full examination is not possible.
Hi Ken, thank you for sharing this video with us!! It is so encouraging to hear Ryan deliberately responding to you and Sue when you talk to him. How exciting!! I imagine the next step might be figuring out the best assistive communication devices to help Ryan express himself. I think I saw him moving his eyebrows in the video. It’s clear Ryan’s brain continues to heal and our hope in his continued recovery remains as strong as ever!! Go Ryan!!!
Sending you love, prayers and always faith and hope…hugs, Paula
