Video: “Ryan, Close Your Mouth”

January 31, 2013 by Ryan's Rally LLC 39 Comments

As most know, I am a huge skeptic when it comes to looking too much into Ryan’s responses. It takes a lot to make me think he is voluntarily responding. Now, I’m still not one-hundred percent convinced with what I’m about to show you but this one might be hard to deny.

Here’s why…

For the five minutes leading up to the point when I began shooting video, Ryan was consistent (albeit delayed) in responding to my request. It was more than enough for me to document it. For your benefit in seeing what I’m talking about, I trimmed what I captured to just a few minutes.

Then, something amazing happened later that evening. Ryan was in bed for the night and quite comfortable. He hadn’t made anything close to the response from earlier. I grabbed my smartphone and asked Sue to watch the video. Sue was standing next to Ryan as she did this with the volume at maximum.

Amazingly, Ryan seemed to follow the commands again — with the same delayed response time and facial reaction — as the video played! I could hardly believe it. Sue cried in joy.

Then, if that’s not enough, it happened about an hour later as Kari was video chatting with us. I showed her the video and Ryan was again listening and responding! Again, I say! I told Kari this and she wanted to see it for herself. I turned the lens on Ryan so Kari could see him. Kari asked him to close his mouth. He did! She asked again. He did again.

It’s hard to deny this seems real. It happened three times spread out over many hours. We where beyond excitement. Kari didn’t want to end the call, despite having a ton of homework. I couldn’t get her focused back on her schoolwork until I thought of something Ryan would (and did) say to her to get her moving. I was wondering if Kari would remember it too, so I asked her what her brother would say about her not tending to her work. It’s tough brotherly love. Without a second thought, she nailed it.

Have fun with being a failure while I’m successful.

I tell you often just how much I appreciate everything you do and provide for my son. Today, like every day, is no different. Ryan would never be where he is without you. Getting him to this point, that I call possibly possible, has everything to do with your unending help. You believed in him even when I doubted. You give the resources and support for me to work with him in creative ways. You got him to this point, trusting me all along with your generosity. This is a point that was unimaginable not so long ago. Without you, well, I can’t even think of what his condition might be.

I asking you to share today’s post in Facebook and other social media. I want people to see this. I want people to know just how much you touched lives.

Team Diviney, thank you so much. You really are the best!

Don’t ever for a second think that anyone deserves the credit for what you have done for your son. You, his mom, his sister, himself and his doctors have done this. Lots of prayers too but he is fighting HARD and the amazing work you have done with him is VERY VERY VERY visible. Keep feeding his mind like you are his body! ๐Ÿ™‚ Very cool to see gives lots of hope to everyone.

do you think it’s possible he might be trying to communicate with this lip movements? Perhaps there is a pattern to the lip movements? Just a crazy thought.

OK Ken-That is Ryan giving you VALIDATION!!! High Five & a Hug to your Boy…I’m so proud of him:0) There is no possible way that it was involuntary movement… Not a chance. What is just as beautiful is his turning his head looking for you and then changing his direction when you move TO FIND YOU. He GETS IT. He HEARS it, He is THINKING about it. He is DOING it. i offer you further argument for the case. If he wasn’t getting it, he would have just made that DALLAS HATING FACE in response to you telling him to close him mouth!! I just watched that video and he clearing was RESPONDING VERBALLY to Sue! I hope that one day Ryan will be able to look at you and say, “Dad, quit telling me what to do”!!!…That will be a glorious day (No disrespect to you my fellow parent, I promise)

That’s a wonderful response, Mr. Diviney. I am so happy for you and your family. ๐Ÿ™‚

As a teacher (I do love to teach!) I learned a lot while my husband was in his coma. Numerous times, I thought he was responsive (he was), and the doctors or nurses would tell me he wasn’t. They seemed to think that the most important thing someone could do is make a peace sign. I was married to him for 17 years at that time, and I really never saw him do it before the accident. So, along with other things like throwing a ball (while in the coma), I started to teach him over and over what movements make a peace sign. I held his hand and moved it while describing what I did. I did this hundreds if not thousands of times. Well, eventually when he was told to make a peace sign he did. I think that I “taught” him the skill. I don’t believe that his mind and body were communicating enough at that point to do it himself. Soon after, he would throw a tennis ball that we placed in his hand (Only on the right, though. He had become paralyzed on the left side, and we didn’t know it at that point).

My point to all of this is that I can see the wheels turning in Ryan’s head right now. I believe that you are on to something and he is going through the process of waking up.

*My husband did wake up eventually. He holds conversations and is very active. I wish this for Ryan. I was told by the doctors that he would die in a nursing home or pneumonia or bed sores. Guess what??? They were wrong.

Praise the Lord – Love you, Ryan! Ken and Sue, this is testament to your great love and perserverance in the face of such overwhelming circumstances. This serves as further confirmation of what the doctor at the IBRF believes, that Ryan is responding. I pray for continued progress and healing for Ryan, and I pray for joy for the Diviney family as you celebrate Ryan’s successes. Please tell Ryan that Mr. and Mrs. T pray for him and that we are proud of his hard work and progress.

Hi Ken, thanks for sharing this with us, what a GREAT way to start our day!!! And there is more to come, I’m sure — lots more!!

    YAY!!!!!

I’m thanking God right now for giving us the faith to understand that He is with Ryan and with us too.

We couldn’t be Team Diviney if you didn’t open up the door and let us in, Ken. Well, maybe we had to push at your door but you still let us in — and it’s been an amazing journey ever since. You and your family are a huge blessing to us!!

Please give Ryan a big hug for me, and tell him how proud I am of him!!! Wishing you both a good day, filled with new hope and glimpses of good things to come.
    Love, hugs, prayers continuing

Well, Ken, this is beautiful! I think he is awake, but it must be so difficult to get everything going — from the brain to the muscles in his mouth. What a wonderful thing you are doing for your son. It’s paying off in a big way! I am so thankful for Ryan’s family who cares so much and for Team Diviney. We are with you all the way!
