If you followed this blog, even for a short time, you are familiar with Dr. Hinkle. Really, he is a special man. Especially to Ryan and our family. He has made it a purpose to care for Ryan’s eyes. His work is clear, as Ryan’s eyes are mostly healed and continue to make progress.
I’ve never been of the belief that doctors and nurses should not get attached to patients. Some patients, like Ryan, need this attention. For us, we are not satisfied unless the doctor or nurse “takes Ryan home with them”, as they say. We look for this in a doctor. It’s just that important to us.
Dr. Hinkle goes beyond taking Ryan home with him. He comes to Ryan. He attends fundraisers. He orders “We Got This” shirts for his family. He gets us in contact with lawyers and other doctors. He attends seminars seeking out products for Ryan. He checks in to see how we’re doing. Yep… old-fashioned care, for sure.
You all must know by know that I have a knack for sharing text messages, on occasion, I receive from people. You see, every once in a while they touch me… deeply. Such was the case with one (of many) I received on Friday:
Dr. Hinkle: Ken, as always, I really appreciate your positive comments in your blog. I have had so many patients who are new or existing that have mentioned this. The fact remains, I look forward to seeing you guys and caring for Ryan.
Me: That’s great to hear!
Dr. Hinkle: I hope Ryan’s eyes are looking good with the GenTeal gel?
Me: No worse.
Dr. Hinkle: That sounds good Ken. I will be here if you see any changes. You guys take care.
Three things pop out at me immediately: 1) I need to do a better job responding to people. I really suck at it, 2) Dr. Hinkle is just so genuine, and 3) Readers see value in my recommendations and let businesses know how they heard about them.
If you’re looking for excellent vision care in Northern Virginia, he’s the doctor for it. Here is a link to his Vision Source site.

It is so humbling to have a doctor that you can rely on and call a friend. A true doctor that truly cares about his patients and goes the extra mile to make sure that he is giving 110% effort. God has blessed you with him and may he continue to provide you the care you deserve. Still here and thinking & praying for your family. Hugs to Kari for being a wonderful and loving sister. It has to be so hard for her to “go on” with life. She has to know and remember Ryan would want her to. She is such a caring person and Ryan is lucky to have her as a sister and you and Sue have her as a daughter. May God bless you and guide you when you are at your weakest and may he be there too when you are your highest.
P.S. Looks like you survived last night…
(Of course, some of us are so… aah..”multi-faceted”, that we can show just a few sides of us…and not get sround to showing the…CORE…)
Yep. You all are blessed to have Dr. Hinkle in your corner–starting with Ryan…
Ken, Sue & Ryan, you are so fortunate to have such a great, caring, Doctor. I know that it gives you great comfort to know that Dr. Hinkle is only a text away. It is hard to find such a jenuwine, ooops, person!
lol Gloria
Hey, it’s not so important that everything is spelled correctly, it’s what we say, from the heart.
Also, this site is getting so “uptown” that a downtown girl like me is gonna have trouble getting around on it.
This is so nice to hear. Doctor’s are in a position where it truly makes a difference when they take their “work” home with them. I am so glad you found someone to do this for Ryan. He has beautiful eyes and it looks like you found exactly the man to keep them that way!

I need to make an appt. to see Dr. Hinkle soon — I am a scaredy cat, but he seems like such a nice person, and it’s obvious how much he cares about his patients. Thank you Dr. Hinkle for being there when you are so very needed.
Ken, you’re right, we do heed your recommendations — about doctors, businesses, medical info, etc. You even know excellent health and beauty tips, such as soaking your feet in vinegar and water for smooth skin– that was an awesome tip!
Thank you for the update, and for knowing how much we all look forward to hearing from you. I hope you have a positive day. Sending love & prayers for you and Ryan, Kari and Sue. Hugs, Paula
It warms my heart to hear of all of the good (and I’m certain very humble) people placed on this earth to do great things for others. Let’s never lose sight of the special and unique gifts that these good people bring to our lives every day. It’ so easy to dwell on the negative sometimes that we tend to overlook the truly beautiful people who touch our lives in that perfect way…giving selflessly of themselves. Dr. Hinkle, and many other “unknowns” who have touched your family’s life in very loving, supporting and giving ways are a true inspiration. To hear of them often helps to guide me through the struggles of my day and give us all hope. Thank you Dr. Hinkle and all of the many other Good Samaritans touching the Divineys. And please continue to post all that you feel Ken. It helps all of us more than you probably realize! Love, Peggie
Beautiful thoughts, Peggie! Please keep us focused, Lord, on the good that people do, and on You, of course.
Ken,
You are absolutely right, Dr. Hinkle is geniune!! With a family of 5, all in corrective lenses, he makes our visits a pleasure. Every one of us enjoy our check ups, as we love to hear how he is doing and fill him in on how we all are. He cares and listens! He is a gift!
He will, undoubtedly, need a bigger office very soon!
oops, *genuine, Ken, can you add spell check to this blog in your spare time, ha!
You do know it underlines, in red, any words that it suspects is misspelled… right?
I swear it didn’t underline it! Even if it did, I get so excited to post sometimes, would have missed it most likely.
