Me
I must really pay close attention to what I post. I hope I didn’t come across as needy yesterday. Or, even worse, as pitiful. No sooner do I put out the post then offers started coming in to get me stuff. One thing I learned through this tragedy is just how little “stuff” I need. I’ve grown a liking to not even wanting stuff. It really gives me a feeling of power and independence to not rely on material belongings or acts/symbols of status.
I’m not embellishing at all when I tell you I lived out of a backpack for a year while Ryan was in one hospital or another. Sue splurged and lived out of a oversized-suitcase. The nerve of her!
I had everything I needed, plus a laptop and cell phone. Obviously, this is not living the high life. Still, it gave me a simplicity that I sincerely appreciate.
I really do appreciate all the offers. It’s touching how people care for me. It’s also quite humbling. My concern is I might have appeared to be using this blog for personal gain. I never want that to be the case. Ever.
Sue & Kari
The ladies headed out for NYC early this morning. They were on the road a little after 5:00 AM. Provided they don’t hit any back-ups, this should have them settled-in before noon.
Sue will need to go in to work, but they will have the evenings and nights to paint the town. Further, I have no doubt Kari can keep herself occupied during the days.
Ryan
Ryan has been putting together some very peaceful days and nights. I’m sure having Kari’s presence in the house helps. Her energy is at a different level than I can offer. It’s good for him.
I love this picture (above). Kari exhausted herself working with Ryan. Half in the bed, she laid her head on his chest and went out like a light. I can only imagine the comfort they both felt in that time.

Hi Ken,
So great to hear Ryan is having some good days. I’m sure having Kari there was of great comfort to him and to you and Sue! I’m also happy Kari and Sue got to go to NYC together….girls time is precious.
On another note, please don’t worry about people thinking you are needy. You don’t come across that way at all!!!! People help because they WANT to, and not because they feel they have to. That’s the beauty of community. We rally.
Thinking of you and wishing you a peaceful, happy day. SHSP, NGA
Love,
carla

Ken,
We came from China to a hospital room in LA with one suitcase each and never looked back. It is freeing. I often felt that we were fortunate that we did not have a home, house payment, car, and other things that would put more stress on us regarding how were were going to pay the bills when our focus needed to be on Jonathan. We have watched other families in our same situation struggle to give 24/7 care and fend off the bill collectors. We purchase necessities and wear the clothes we had almost 4 years ago. I understand. You did not come across as needy. You were stating the facts. HOWEVER, I am in absolute AWE of the people (saints) that have embraced your family. This is the way it should be and I pray they are blessed a thousand fold for all they have done for all of you. I understand writing something and then being worried if someone perceives it as something other than it was meant. Quite frankly, I have become more bold in my daily emails on Jonathan because of reading your blog. I have stopped being concerned about it. It is what it is. Thrilled that Ryan has had good days, that Kari is being treated, and that you are being blessed by people who care.

If ever a picture brought me to tears, it’s this one…it is love personified…beautiful.
In no way did you come across as being needy or in need of anyone’s pity. That’s just not you!! Don’t confuse our love for you and your family as being anything other than that — sometimes it gets a a little out of control I guess : )
Praying for a day of rest, healing, recovery and joy.
Love & prayers, Paula

Your pictures capture the essence of LOVE! Family….devotion…..inspiration…….
togetherness……What many families want but often can’t find. I’m so happy for Sue and Kari and their connection in New York City. I KNOW Ryan senses Kari and the charisma she brings to your home. It is a blessing “watching” your family interract.
I loved the backpack/suitcase comment. Having less IS so freeing! And it’s amazing how little STUFF really matters when faced with critical issues! Love, hugs, and prayers for a wonderful week! God bless you!

Glad to hear Ryan’s been having a few peaceful days/nights. I hope Kari has a great time in NYC. I really enjoyed talking to her Saturday, probably the longest conversation we’ve had since I’ve lived on the street – I just think she’s such a special young lady. I told her and Katie Mesmer they restore my hope in young people ; )
Hope to see YOU soon too my friend.
