I placed a call to Huttonsville Correctional Center yesterday morning to get the new date for convicted felon Austin Vantrease’s rescheduled parole hearing. The hearing was originally scheduled for last month, but not all the information (e.g., like the behavioral report, psychologial assessment, etc.) was available. As the call was dialing through I wondered when they rebranded “prisons” as “correctional centers”. I’m sure they had other reasons, but I’m guessing it was to sound more politically correct. We certainly wouldn’t want to offend any criminals and their families, now would we?
Here’s what I was told when I called. Austin Vantease will have his hearing before the West Virginia Parole Board on Tuesday, August 28th. It will begin at nine in the morning, with a thirty minute allotment. The hearing will be held right in the Huttonsville Prison (oops!) Correctional Center. Vantrease in now incarcerated there, serving his two to ten-year sentence; which, in truth, is a two to five-year sentence unless he gets himself in more trouble behind bars. Even then, I hear the prisoners have privileges removed (to include solitary confinement) before they add time to their sentence. I suppose it might have something to do with overcrowding.
I wonder when the outcome will be known. Immediately? That same day? Longer? If anyone has any insight into this it would be nice for everyone to know. For my part, either way the Parole Board rules, I would like to know sooner rather than later.

I did six years on a 2 to 25 year sentence for breaking and entering charges and i was only 18 at the time of my crimes and i didnt have but a few write ups for petty stuff over the years and i didnt make parole until my fifth time up. So you dont have much to worry about on him making parole. They will have the hearing and then make everyone step out while they make their decision and then have everyone step back in and hear their decision. Huttonsville is where I finally made parole. As far as a comment to whether I think he should make parole I cannot make one until I hear a the facts and circumstances surrounding the case.

Typically if they go up for parole and get it granted he would receive a tentative parole date. WV typically moves fast and he would receive his out date in the near future. This gives Huttonsville time to prepare all paperwork. The paperwork would include his Notice of Release, Parole conditions and where and when to report to his Parole officer.

Always thinking of you and praying. I can’t imagine the good people on the parole board would let Austin Vantrease out to walk amongst us. They would only have to look at this web site to see what he is capable of.

Another long unending day for you,so sorry ,know there’s been SO many to get through these last 2 yrs,9 mos. Thinking of you all today and everyday

Ken, my ex husband is currently at the same correctional facility and has gone up for parole twice. I can tell you that from my experience with parole hearings, we knew the very same day what the board decided, when he would go up again and what his chances were of making parole the next time. His release is not something I am looking forward to, so like you, I always want to know ASAP. I hope this helps and gives you a little insight.

This is excellent information. Especially since it’s not only in West Virginia, but at the same prison.
